Not Just Small Talk

Daisy & Nevaeh’s Story

Daisy and Nevaeh from North London shared their harrowing experience of a Turkish holiday in 2023 when Nevaeh was 12 years old. They recounted how Nevaeh was hospitalised during a heatwave, fainting from extreme dehydration amidst 40-degree temperatures and taken through wildfires in an ambulance after a day of quad biking in the sun left her bedridden. The mother and daughter talked about how unexpected this incident was, how it impacted their future holiday plans, and what they do differently now.

"As the ambulance called, I thought I was going to lose her"

Holly’s Story

Holly from Yorkshire shared her experience of a recent holiday to Kefalonia, Greece while pregnant with her first child. She described how her body reacted differently to heat compared to previous trips before her pregnancy, noting swelling, breathlessness, and fatigue even in mild temperatures in which her husband was fine. Holly recounted the challenges faced during activities like beekeeping in the heat, and the steps she took to cool down.  Holly was joined by midwife Angie to share insights on managing heat during pregnancy.

“I didn’t know if I should go to the hospital. I was scared.”

Lucy’s Story

Lucy, a 58 year old from North London, recounted her distressing experience during a recent holiday to Egypt’s North Coast. She described suffering severe sunburn and heatstroke, leading to hospitalisation upon her return home in July 2024. Despite many years of living in and visiting hot countries, Lucy had never experienced this before. As we see more extreme temperatures worldwide, Lucy is sharing her story to warn people of the dangers of sun exposure and the potentially life-threatening nature of heatstroke.

"I suffered severe blisters on my feet and lips due to the strong sun"
